Legal troubles rarely go unnoticed, so it was no surprise that Arthrex Inc.’s resolution of kickback allegations with the U.S. government was the most read story on the ODT website this past week. The $16 million settlement is the Naples, Fla.-based firm’s punishment for allegedly paying kickbacks to a Colorado-based orthopedic surgeon, though the company did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the resolution. The federal government had accused Arthrex of providing renumeration to the surgeon in the form of royalty payments purportedly for the surgeon’s contributions to Arthrex’s SutureBridge and SpeedBridge products, when the renumeration was in fact, intended to induce the doctor’s use and recommendation of the firm’s products.
